New research study concerns the [environmental](https://www.investing.com/equities/mission-newenergy-ltd-company-profile) effect of increasing imports of [utilized cooking](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/mission-newenergy) oil (UCO) into the UK and Europe.
[Chip fat](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/51278-86) and other oils are considered waste, so when they are utilized to make [biodiesel](https://www.marketscreener.com/quote/stock/MISSION-NEWENERGY-LIMITED-178469/company/) it saves carbon emissions by displacing fossil oil.
But such is the demand across Europe that [imports](https://forest500.org/rankings/companies/mission-newenergy-limited) now [account](https://www.zonebourse.com/cours/action/MISSION-NEWENERGY-LIMITED-8557641/) for more than half of the UCO that's made into fuel.
According to the study, external, there's no way to prove these imports are [sustainable](https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/m/0cqd_rb).
With no screening of what's being available in, [specialists](https://www.abnnewswire.net/companies/en/31347/%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%A9%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%97-Mission-NewEnergy-%E0%B8%88%E0%B8%B3%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%94.html/4) believe it is likewise ripe for scams.
Used cooking oil imports may increase deforestation
Consumers posture 'growing threat' to tropical forests
Reducing emissions from transport is proving to be one of the most difficult challenges for governments all over the world.
They've motivated using biofuels as an important ways of curbing carbon from automobiles and trucks.
Biofuels are normally a blend of fossil fuel and oil made from plants or [veggies](https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/m/0cqd_rb).
The reality that these crops can be re-grown and absorb more CO2 implies they counteract the carbon released when utilized in engines.
Soy and palm oil were once widely used as elements of [biodiesel](https://biodieselmagazine.com/articles/felda-global-buys-missions-kuantan-port-plant-for-11-5-million-9053) but this practice has been extensively rejected since it encourages deforestation.
So for the last decade approximately, making use of oil has expanded enormously as an alternative feedstock for fuel.
Chip fat and other waste oils have become a [crucial](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) part of biodiesel with a reliable market [emerging](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) throughout Europe to gather and process the item.
But with the amount of biodiesel made from UCO increasing by around 40% every year since 2014, there merely isn't enough chip fat to go around.
According to a report from the project group Transport & Environment, external, majority of the UCO utilized in Europe is imported.
Their research study recommends this is extremely troublesome when it pertains to effect on the environment.
While UCO is thought about a waste product in the UK, in China, Indonesia and Malaysia it has long been utilized to feed animals. The report raises the question of what individuals in these countries are [replacing](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608) the UCO with, when it is exported.
In 2019, Malaysia exported 90 million litres of UCO to the UK and Ireland. Figures for their exports to other European nations aren't available however the flow of UCO is likely to be similar.
With a population of around 33 million, that's close to three litres per head of used oil that's gathered and [exported](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608) to the UK and Ireland alone.
By comparison, Thailand, which has a population of 70 million people, managed to [collect](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MNEL) around 5 million litres of UCO in 2019.
"Because we are buying it, they have less used cooking oil to use on the things that they were previously utilizing it for," said Greg Archer with Transport & Environment.
"And they're just buying more virgin oil which virgin oil is mostly palm oil, because that's the most affordable oil readily available.
"So indirectly, we're simply encouraging more [logging](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159352/mission-newenergy-debt-free-focused-on-biofuel-joint-venture-60797.html) in Southeast Asia."
Another major problem with UCO is the suspicion of fraud.
Because of need from Europe, the cost of UCO is typically higher than palm oil. The worry is that some deceitful traders are merely watering down shipments of UCO with palm.
As oils of various types are blended in bulk for transport, and no screening of the products is performed, some specialists think scams is swarming.
The tip of scams anywhere along the chain of supply is turned down by the European Waste-to-Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA), who state there are robust certification schemes in location.
"It is extensively understood that the European Commission has taken appropriate steps to completely suppress unsound market [practices](https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/m/0cqd_rb) in [biofuel](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MNEL) markets," stated Angel Alberdi, EWABA's secretary general.
He states a new database being established by the EU will make sure that trading, accreditation and sustainability information on all bio-liquids will have to be signed up.
"The combination of modified accreditation schemes and the pan-EU track and [trace database](https://www.energy-xprt.com/companies/mission-newenergy-limited-36048) will ensure that no sustainability concerns occur in the entire biofuels and bio-liquids supply chain," he told BBC News.
Others in the field are concerned that the database concept, which was first mooted in 2018, may not be reliable in stemming suspected scams.
The report from Transport & Environment explains that with shipping and aviation aiming to decarbonise by using biofuels, demand for UCO might double over the next years.
"Rising the demand beyond sustainable supply levels would increase these issues, and dangers of utilizing 'phony' UCO, potentially resulting in indirect impacts such as logging."
